What Serany thinks about this poem

Background

Leo Marks wrote it on Christmas Eve 1943 for a girlfriend who had just been killed in a plane crash. He later gave it to Violette Szabo, a secret agent, to use as a code.

Meaning

He's handing everything over: the life he's got, the love he's got, and the rest he'll get are all hers. He accepts there's a long wait before they meet again.

Who's it for

A widow or widower, and anyone who served. Right for a love that was certain, and someone who never went in for big words.

If—

This poem is for someone who got on with things, kept their temper, and didn’t make a fuss when life went against them. The sort of person other people steadied themselves against.

The Village Blacksmith

This poem is for a working man who provided, turned up, and never made anything of it. Someone whose children still remember the sound of him getting on with the day.

Are you planning a funeral?
